CALENDAR BOYS GET THEIR KIT ON

TARA GREAVES

With stained glass windows dating back to the 14th century, historic Norwich Cathedral is probably the last place you would expect to see a team of footballers having a kick about.

But that is exactly what members of the Wensum Albion team did when they set about producing their Football in Strange Places charity calendar.

What's more, instead of following the naked charity calendar craze, the team decided to keep their kit on as they played in some of Norwich's most recognisable places.

The original idea for the calendar, officially launched last night by Norwich City manager Glenn Roeder, came from team member Nick Parrott, who plays in central midfield, and also took most of the photographs.

Mr Parrott said: “Every time we say to someone we have a calendar, they always ask 'are you naked?' But we didn't want to do just another naked charity calendar. You see them in the shops all the time now and I think they are a bit passé. We wanted to do something different and without sponsor funding we wouldn't be able to continue so we decided to keep our kit on.”

Inspired by the Nike TV commercial shown during the 1998 World Cup which featured Brazil playing football in an airport, the club set about shooting a calendar featuring players having a kick about in places you would not expect around Norwich.

Along with the cathedral cloisters, players also did shoots at city hall council chamber, the bus station, the train station, Castle Mall, Millennium Plain outside the Forum, Norwich International Airport, four metres underwater on the bottom of a diving pool, Mousehold Heath, in a Norfolk straw field, Marble Hall at Norwich Union's headquarters and Norwich Castle.

Mr Roeder said he supported the idea of charity calendars. “I have never been in one myself, or any sort of calendar for that matter, but I think anything that raises money for charity is a good idea,” he said.

Half the profits from the sales of the calendar are being donated to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.

Caretaker manager Aaron Bowes-Shorten said they were quite nervous about playing in some of the locations.

“I didn't realise quite how much glass there was in the cathedral cloisters but you look up and it's all around, so that was quite nerve-wracking. I think it is my favourite one though.

“We wanted to support a cancer charity as my mum, Julie, who is the manager of the club, is recovering from non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and I'm just filling in.”

The team, which is sponsored by Hatch Brenner solicitors, plays on Saturdays in Division One of the Norwich Business Houses League but is currently second from bottom in the table with just one point all season following a goalless draw with UEA.

This is the second calendar that the club have produced and last year's Counterfeit Classics - where famous football moments were recreated - was described as “less ambitious”.

Mr Parrott added: “I don't think you can get much better than what we have done this year but we have some ideas for 2009.”

The calendar, priced £7.99, is available in Origins at the Forum in Norwich and via the club's website www.wensumalbionfc.info.

The club has also developed another website www.myspace.com/footballinstrangeplaces to inspire others.
